Harrisonburg Smiles as Old Dominion Women’s Tennis Sweeps James Madison!

Gather around, tennis fans! Harrisonburg, Virginia, witnessed an electrifying showdown on March 29, 2025, as the *Old Dominion University* (ODU) women’s tennis team stormed the courts with an impressive 4-0 victory against their rivals, *James Madison University* (JMU). The match took place at the charming Hillside Courts, creating a perfect setting for some fierce competition.

A Match to Remember

Ranked at an admirable No. 41 in women’s tennis, ODU showcased their prowess and determination, improving their record to 12 wins and 4 losses. Even more thrilling is their undefeated streak in the Sun Belt Conference, now standing tall at 7-0. On the other side of the court, JMU’s spirits may have dipped as their record fell to 6-11 overall, with a conference tally of 4-3.

Doubles Delight

The day kicked off with doubles matches, where ODU quickly clinched the doubles point by winning both matches on courts one and three, each with a striking score of 6-2. The dynamic duo of Sofia Johnson and Victoria Matasova held their ground with a solid win against JMU’s Daria Munteanu and Ines Oliveira, while the impressive partnership of Marina Markina and Kira Matushkina triumphed over Hope Moulin and Sophie Williams. Meanwhile, JMU’s second doubles team was leading against ODU’s Lidiia Rasskouskaia and Ulyana Romanova but the match was left unfinished at a score of 5-2 in favor of JMU.

Singles Showdown

As the singles matches commenced, it became clear that ODU was in the driver’s seat. Kira Matushkina continued the team’s momentum by defeating Elena Kraleva with a score of 6-3, 6-3 on court two. The excitement peaked as ODU’s No. 13 ranked Sofia Johnson went head-to-head against Daria Munteanu on court one, coming away with a calculated victory of 6-4, 6-2. With that, ODU was on the brink of sealing the match.

Marina Markina, finishing strong, clinched the match for ODU by overpowering Hope Moulin on court six with straight sets of 6-4, 6-3. It’s not often one sees such determination on display!

Unfinished Business

Even though ODU had already secured the victory, several matches were still in heated battle. On court three, Ines Oliveira made a comeback against Lidiia Rasskouskaia after trailing at 5-2 in the second set, eventually taking it to a tiebreaker and winning 7-6. The match, however, was left unfinished because ODU had already secured the overall win.

Ulyana Romanova had also won the first set against Sophie Williams at 6-2, but Williams was leading in the second set at 3-2 when the match concluded. In possibly the most intense turn of events, Mia Saveljic from JMU took the first set against Victoria Matasova with a score of 6-3 but, unfortunately for her, was trailing at 0-1 in the third set when the match was abandoned.

What’s Next?

With this emphatic win under their belt, JMU is set to bounce back and face *Texas State* in San Marcos, Texas, on April 4, 2025, at 1 p.m. ET (Noon CT). With each game, one can only expect the thrill of college tennis to ramp up, and fans eagerly await the next chapter of this exciting season!

So, here’s to ODU and their delightful victory! Keep those tennis shoes laced up because it is just getting started!
