Overnight lane closures on I-64 West with construction barriers

News Summary

James City County travelers are advised to prepare for overnight lane closures on I-64 West starting Sunday night. The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will implement single-lane closures from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. daily for the next two weeks due to a major construction project aimed at improving the roadway’s connectivity. This will include a long-term traffic shift and the addition of a new lane intended to enhance safety and traffic flow. Travelers should stay updated for a smoother experience ahead.

Overnight Lane Closures Ahead for I-64 West in James City County

James City County residents and travelers, brace yourselves! Starting Sunday night, drivers will encounter overnight lane closures on I-64 West. Get ready to alter your evening commute plans because the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has just announced that single-lane closures will span over the next two weeks!

When and Why?

The lane closures will occur nightly from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.. What’s the reason behind this late-night inconvenience? The work being done is part of a major construction project focused on enhancing connectivity between the bustling areas of Richmond and Hampton Roads. This means that while you might find temporary annoyance due to these closures, it’s all for a better, smoother driving experience in the future.

The Traffic Shift Explained

During this construction phase, crews will implement a long-term traffic shift that extends from east of the Route 199 Lightfoot exit (exit 234) all the way to the New Kent/James City County line. But don’t stress too much—VDOT has communicated that the traffic will simply shift five feet to the right during this segment of the project. This means that while there will be some adjustments, the road remains open—albeit a bit tighter than normal.

What’s Being Improved?

This ambitious project isn’t just about shifting lanes. It plans to widen approximately 29 miles of travel lanes and introduce a brand-new third 12-foot-wide lane! Exciting, right? Along with this expansion, there will also be 10-foot-wide paved shoulders added to help with the flow of traffic and to enhance safety for everyone on the road.

Going the Extra Mile

While traffic might get a little tight, VDOT is also taking steps to improve infrastructure along this busy stretch. Expect to see temporary traffic barriers as part of the traffic shift implementation aimed at keeping drivers safe as crews work diligently through the night.

This isn’t the first time this year that traffic changes have disrupted the familiar flow on I-64. In March, there was a similar traffic shift in the eastbound direction along this section, so drivers might want to stay on their toes!

Bridges and More

The scope of this project also includes necessary repairs, rehabilitation, and widening of two bridges on I-64 over Six Mount Zion Road. This serves as just another aspect of ensuring that this vital corridor remains not only busy but safe for all who travel through it.

What Else to Expect?

As if that weren’t enough, the Lightfoot Park and Ride lot in York County will be paved as part of the initiative. To top it all off, the project entails the installation of overhead signage, advanced traffic management technology systems, sound barrier walls, retaining walls, and storm drainage systems to make sure everything runs smoothly even during heavy rains.

A Look Ahead

VDOT expects that this traffic shift will stick around until the summer of 2026, with the I-64 Gap Segment C Widening Project anticipated to reach completion as early as late 2027. For all the details and updates on this expansive project, check out the VDOT website where they keep information current and accessible.

So, if you’re planning on driving along I-64 West in James City County, set some reminders on your phone about these closures and stay informed. Safe travels, and see you on the road—just a little more to the right!
