Philip had been living with a heart condition for the past decade, but despite his health challenges, he remained vibrant and active in life. Only four weeks before his passing, he took part in a ten-day reunion in Fairbanks, Alaska, where he connected with friends and former parishioners, showcasing his zest for relationships and community.
A Family Tradition of Faith
Philip’s connection to the Lutheran faith ran deep, as he was not only a devoted minister but also a son, grandson, great-grandson, nephew, brother, uncle, and father-in-law to several Lutheran pastors. This rich lineage adds a special depth to the impact he had on the church. After graduating from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri in 1969, he was ordained into the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod in June 1971. Through the years, he served parishes in New Orleans, Atlanta, and even ventured to Fairbanks, Alaska.
Philip didn’t stop there; he pursued further education with graduate work at the Presbyterian School of Christian Education, receiving a Master of Religious Education in 1970, and later earned a Doctorate in Theology from Candler School of Theology in 1987. He truly believed in the importance of continuous learning and growth.
A Life of Adventure
Philip enjoyed a rich post-retirement life, splitting his time between two homes in Virginia, one in Nelson County and the other in Williamsburg. Along with his beloved wife, Judith Louise Wedig, who passed away in 2023 after 55 years of marriage, they embraced an active lifestyle that included cycling. Together, they completed six bike tours across Europe and explored numerous bike trails throughout the Eastern United States. Their adventurous spirit was a testament to their love for exploration and each other.
Following Judith’s passing, Philip continued to travel to strengthen ties with family and friends, ensuring that his life remained a colorful tapestry of connections and experiences. His love for music also played a big role in his life; he was skilled at playing the piano, organ, and trombone. Notably, he played trombone with a Charlottesville-based group and contributed to 16 devotional videos for the church year.
A Legacy of Service
Philip was more than just a pastor; he was a visionary who founded a Samaritan Counseling Center in Fairbanks and was instrumental in establishing several Lutheran Child Development Centers. His advocacy extended beyond the pulpit as he fought for reasonable gun control laws and supported the Virginia Interfaith Center for Public Policy, promoting economic, racial, and social justice.
As an amateur essayist, he penned a memoir titled “Confessions of a Failed Conversionist” and wrote weekly letters to his granddaughters for six years. His dedication to his family shone through as he created a series of fifty “dispatches” for his older granddaughters. Additionally, his “Monday Morning Encouragement” letters provided uplifting messages for Stephen Ministers and caregivers.
A Heartfelt Goodbye
Philip is survived by his four children, Jill, Rachel, Cynthia, and Seth, as well as numerous grandchildren and extended family members. A beloved friend named Mary also holds a special place in his heart. His funeral service will be held at the King of Glory Lutheran Church in Williamsburg on May 12 at 9:30 a.m., and the community is invited to join for breakfast and remembrances starting at 7:00 a.m.
