They have proudly secured their fifth consecutive conference tournament title, making it their third win in the Sun Belt Conference, with a decisive 4-1 victory over Marshall at the beautiful Rome Tennis Center in Georgia. This victory not only adds to their impressive collection of titles but also marks their sixth consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Talk about a winning streak!
Ranked 46th nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, the Monarchs have shown their determination and skill, especially since their transition from Conference USA, where they previously clinched two tournament titles. Against a solid Marshall team, ranked 72nd in the nation, ODU faced a rough start. Marshall claimed the doubles point by winning two out of three matches. But our Monarchs didn’t fold under pressure. They prevailed in singles play with outstanding performances from several key players.
Kira Matushkina triumphed at line 2 with a convincing score of 6-2, 6-1. Victoria Matasova followed suit, dominating line 5 with an impressive 6-2, 6-0 victory. Ulyana Romanova showcased her skills at line 4 with a strong 6-2, 6-2 win, setting the stage for Lidiia Rasskouskaia, who ultimately clinched the match for ODU with a thrilling 7-6, 6-2 victory at line 3.
To celebrate this splendid achievement, ODU is hosting a selection-show party on Monday at 5 p.m. at the LR Hill Sports Complex. The men’s team’s selection show will follow at 5:30 p.m..
