News Summary

Williamsburg is preparing for its 92nd Historic Garden Week on April 29, featuring 13 stunning gardens, including an impressive vegetable patch by the Maleckis. This event supports the Garden Club of Virginia, highlighting a blend of historic and modern designs across various properties. Families are encouraged to attend, with tickets available for advance purchase and guided tours offered in select locations. Don’t miss this vibrant celebration of gardens!

Williamsburg Garden Club Excited to Showcase Local Gardens During Historic Garden Week

Get ready, garden enthusiasts! Williamsburg is all set to bloom with fragrant flowers and vibrant vegetable patches as the Historic Garden Week approaches. Scheduled for April 29, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., this year’s tour will feature 13 stunning properties, including the remarkable vegetable garden of Kevin and Denise Malecki.

The Maleckis started their gardening journey in 2022, inspired mainly by YouTube videos. Their small backyard vegetable patch has blossomed into a high-producing garden that they never expected would become part of this esteemed tour. Talk about a pleasant surprise!

A Peek into the Tour

This is the 92nd edition of the Historic Garden Week, which is a delight for garden lovers as it showcases a variety of homes and gardens, both grand and modest. The event not only highlights the beauty of the gardens but also raises funds for the Garden Club of Virginia to support vital historic garden restoration and conservation efforts.

This year’s event promises a delightful mix, featuring four private homes, two private gardens, three historic homes, and four gardens nestled in the charming Colonial Williamsburg area. Properties showcased will be located in neighborhoods like Indian Springs and Burns Lane, with histories that date back as far as the late 1700s up to the 1950s.

Gardens Worth Visiting

One of the highlights will be the Maleckis’ kitchen garden, which spans roughly 800 square feet. It features techniques like “no-dig” gardening, a method that promotes soil health by layering compost over cardboard. They’ll show off an array of vegetables and herbs including juicy tomatoes, crisp cucumbers, and peppers—all grown despite some challenges from pesky garden critters.

In addition to the Maleckis, garden lovers can look forward to exploring an expansive two-acre woodland garden created by Ed and Glenda Lindsey, who have put in significant effort with features like bridges and hundreds of plants integrated throughout the landscape.

Historic and Modern Designs

The Williamsburg tour offers a fascinating glimpse into historical architecture and contemporary design as features like the former kitchen of the Raleigh Tavern and a meticulously restored home that was originally moved from Gloucester will be open for show. It’s a chance to appreciate how past and present can beautifully intertwine.

Families are welcome, but keep in mind that tour rules specify no sharp-heeled shoes, indoor photography is not allowed, and children under 18 need a parent to accompany them. Some homes may also have accessibility challenges, but there will be plenty of volunteer hostesses on hand to highlight historic details and notable décor, ensuring an enriching day for all.

What to Expect on Tour Day

Visitors can explore at their own pace, but guided tours will also be available in select gardens for those keen on gaining more insights. With over 150 floral arrangements adding vibrant colors throughout the tour, there will be no shortage of eye-catching displays.

Tickets for this exciting event are priced at $50 in advance and $60 on the day. If you fancy a bite during the tour, boxed lunches will be available for preorder to enhance your garden experience. Tour check-in will be at either Williamsburg United Methodist Church or Colonial Williamsburg, with several paid parking options and complimentary Colonial Williamsburg bus service included with your ticket!

Mark your calendars, grab your gardening gloves, and get ready for an inspiring day filled with lush greens and blooming creativity. Whether you are a seasoned garden enthusiast or just beginning your journey, this is a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in the beauty of gardens, learn new tips, and ignite a love for gardening in younger attendees. Let’s make this Historic Garden Week a truly memorable one!
