Jerry Gregg Rivers Sr. Passes Away Surrounded by Family at 71

WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA – The community is mourning the loss of Jerry Gregg Rivers Sr., who passed away on April 1, 2025, at the age of 71. Known for his warmth and family-oriented spirit, Jerry took his final breath surrounded by loved ones in a heartfelt farewell.

A Life Rooted in Williamsburg

Born on June 18, 1953, Jerry made his mark in the world right from the quaint neighborhood of Carver Gardens in Williamsburg. He was the cherished son of Evelyn and J.B. Rivers and grew up with a passion for his hometown. After attending York High School and graduating in 1971, Jerry stepped into the professional world with zeal. His early career saw him donning various hats at the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and Eastern State Hospital, and he later became a familiar face at the Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC).

A New Chapter on the Eastern Shore

In 2007, Jerry’s life took a delightful turn when he met Alma Warner, which led him to relocate to the scenic Eastern Shore of Virginia. He continued his career as the store manager for the Virginia ABC store in Cape Charles, a role he held until his retirement. But retirement didn’t quite mean sitting still for Jerry! He kept himself busy by working as a cafeteria monitor and later as a security officer with Accomack County Public Schools, always with a smile on his face and a can-do attitude.

Finding Joy in Simplicity

Jerry found solace in the quiet beauty of the Eastern Shore, where evening drives with Alma filled him with happiness. Known for his love of Virginia’s rich history, he would often take leisurely trips down the back roads to Northern Virginia, sharing stories that showcased the area’s heritage.

When he wasn’t exploring, catch him enjoying a blast from the past with old R&B concerts, or cheering on his favorite football and basketball teams. Jerry was always plugged into the world, keeping himself updated with current affairs, proving that age doesn’t dull the thirst for knowledge.

A Heartfelt Family Man

Family meant everything to Jerry. He took the time for day trips back to Williamsburg, summer excursions filled with laughter and cherished moments with those he loved. And let’s not forget his grandkids! He shared a special bond with his granddaughter Amia, whom he affectionately called “Poota Poot.” His home was always filled with joy from all of his grandchildren, including Monica Watkins, Neijore Copes, Willa Rivers, Kaysen Warner, Alanna Rivers, Ma-kaya Rivers, and Madden Warner. They filled his days with laughter and light.

A Legacy of Love

Sadly, Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and three of his siblings: Rickey, Lafayette, and Sidney. His memory lives on through his beloved wife Alma Rivers, his son Jerry Rivers Jr. with daughter-in-law Megan, and his stepsons Fantonis and Tyler Warner. He is also survived by his brother James Rivers and sister-in-law Linda, along with a loving extended family.

Celebration of Life

As the community comes together to honor his legacy, a memorial service is scheduled for noon on April 19, 2025, at Whiting’s Funeral Home. Friends and family will gather to reminisce and celebrate a life that was wonderfully lived and deeply cherished.

Jerry Gregg Rivers Sr. will always be remembered for his love, his passion for family, and his unyielding spirit. His impact on the Williamsburg community and the hearts of those who knew him will truly last a lifetime.
