Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Donna J. Tipton

In the heart of Williamsburg, Virginia, the community mourns the loss of a vibrant soul, Donna J. Tipton, who passed away at the age of 64. Born on November 16, 1934, in Detroit, Michigan, to Clarence and Ethel Somers, Donna’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, service, and countless cherished connections.

A Joyful Childhood and Lifelong Friendships

Donna enjoyed an idyllic childhood filled with laughter, learning, and adventure. School days were not just about education; they were the foundation for some of her most cherished friendships. Among her closest friends were Alice and her sister-in-law, Ellen, with whom she shared countless memories. Early summers were famously spent at camps, swimming at the YMCA, and basking in quality time with her beloved older brother, Bud Somers.

From Tennis Enthusiast to a Passionate Educator

In high school, Donna discovered her love for tennis, a passion she sustained even into her 70s. After graduation, she took her academic journey to another level at the University of Michigan. Donna was a proud member of Collegiate Sorosis, where she immersed herself in the social swirl of college life. Significant summers helped shape her future—especially one memorable summer in Bay View, Michigan, where she met her future husband. Donna even pursued education at William & Mary to be closer to her brother stationed at Fort Eustis.

A Life of Teaching and Family

In 1956, Donna began her career as a second-grade teacher at Matthew Whaley Elementary School. Many of her former students fondly remembered their time in her class, staying connected with her even into her 60s. Two years later, Donna married Charles Tipton and supported him through dental school in Detroit. Their first child, Leslie, arrived in 1961, prompting the family to move to Williamsburg to establish a new dental practice. Over the years, this loving family continued to grow, welcoming Mary in 1965 and twins Charley and Amy in 1971.

Community Connections and Lifelong Bonds

Donna was more than just a loving mother; she was an active member of the community. With a heart brimming with kindness, she built connections through various organizations, including the Williamsburg German Club, Garden Club, and the Antique Collectors Guild. Her loyalty to friendships was exemplified in her close-knit group known as the “lunch bunch,” where they shared stories, celebrated milestones, and enjoyed each other’s company.

Her Love for Nature and Family Gatherings

One of the great loves in Donna’s life was being by the water. She treasured the memories made during summers at the Outer Banks, North Carolina, and at Gull Lake in Ontario, Canada. These gatherings were filled with laughter and provided the backdrop for building lifelong bonds with family and friends.

A Lasting Legacy

Donna took great pride in her children; they were a reflection of her love and connection with the world. Her 67 ½-year marriage to Charlie was a partnership rooted in respect, kindness, and unwavering devotion. She is survived by her husband, Charlie, and their children: Leslie (Tim), Mary (Bill), Amy (Louie), and Charley. The family also celebrates her three grandchildren—Mitchell, Ashley, and Alejandra—and two great-grandsons.

A Tribute to a Remarkable Woman

Plans are in place for the family to hold a celebration of Donna’s remarkable life this summer, with an exact date to be determined. They extend heartfelt gratitude to the Cove Crest Memory Care and Adult Day, acknowledging the care and support provided to Donna during her later years. As her husband Charlie reflects on their shared experiences, they carry forward the memories that linger, a testament to a life filled with love and connection.
