Old Dominion Women’s Rowing Shines at GW Invite on the Potomac

This past weekend, the picturesque Potomac River set the stage for a thrilling showdown as the Old Dominion University (ODU) women’s rowing team took on the GW Invite. Over two exciting days, these determined athletes competed fiercely, showcasing their hard work and dedication.

A Weekend of Learning and Competition

The competition unfolded on Saturday and wrapped up by Sunday afternoon, providing an excellent opportunity for the team to test their skills against other collegiate teams. As they navigated the waves and the intense competition, the head coach reflected on the essence of the weekend: it was not just a series of races but rather a valuable learning experience for all involved. Coach Conley highlighted two key themes that emerged during the competition: consistency and adaptability. These attributes are vital for success in the world of collegiate rowing.

Racing Highlights

The weekend kicked off strong for ODU’s 1V8+ boat, which faced off against St. Mary’s. They finished in an impressive second place with a time of 06:39.48, narrowly missing out to St. Mary’s winning time of 06:29.89. Returning Strong on Sunday

As Sunday rolled around, ODU’s 1V8+ boat returned to the water with renewed energy and purpose. They raced against West Virginia and emerged triumphant, finishing first in an impressive 06:36.64. Meanwhile, the 2V8+ boat had a slightly tougher outing, finishing second with a time of 06:58.23.

Continuing their weekend journey, ODU’s 1V4+ boat faced West Virginia and secured another second-place finish, clocking in at 07:40.20, while West Virginia finished ahead with 07:32.05. However, ODU’s determination shone through in their final race against West Virginia’s 2V4+ crew, where they clinched a victory, finishing at 07:39.07 against WVU’s 07:47.89.

Final Challenges and Victories

The weekend concluded with ODU competing against UC San Diego. However, the ODU rowing team ended on a high note! Their 1V4+ boat secured victory against UCSD with a time of 07:29.67 compared to UCSD’s 07:34.84. They also celebrated a win by their 2V4+ boat against George Washington, posting a time of 07:41.00 against GW’s 07:45.21.

Looking Ahead

The weekend’s results have left the Monarchs feeling excited and optimistic as the season progresses. This weekend’s experience on the Potomac has not only strengthened their skills but has also fostered a sense of unity and determination. As the team moves forward, all eyes will be on ODU to see how these resilient athletes put their newfound knowledge into action!
